I don't see anywhere in this story about how the ralliers called for Lukiwski's resignation. I did take note of one point though:
Pollard is also seeking legislative changes like allowing sexually active gay men to donate blood and organs.
And this is obviously what the true agenda has been all along. It isn't about making the man apologize. He's done that, at least one very heartfelt one. It's about furthering the agenda for the gay community. It's about opportunism for them, not about apologies, and as far as I see it, they can try to force him to apologize for everything he ever did. Similarly, he can apologize for this one incidence and ignore the rest.
That line in the news story though shows the deeper agenda, and one that should not be open for debate. Attempting changes such as the ones being called for here have no place in this debate. If they want those changes, I suggest that they lobby and work WITH the politicians rather than attempting to embarrass them into doing what the "offended" group wants.
But lets analyze what it is they want there. They don't particularly like the part of the blood donation questionaire which seeks to exclude those men who have engaged in sex with another man since AIDS first showed up. My answer? Too friggin' bad. I agree that the time frame is too long - it can be shortened to a year rather than 30, but there is a very real cause and effect relationship here - If you engage in a high risk behaviour, regardless of your gender or orientation, then you SHOULD be excluded from putting your recipients at higher risk.
Simple as that. And the simple solution? Change the questionaire such that it questions whether you've engaged in high risk behaviours since your last AIDS/HEP tests.
Hurt feelings should not result in higher risks to the population at large, and I would hope that these protesters understand that point.
