The summary? Keith Martin, a Liberal MP, moved to remove the section of the Canadian Human Rights Act which allowed the Human Rights Commissions to prosecute hate speech in all forms, including in publications.
There was an interesting question at Small Dead Animals (http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/007943.html#comments) questioning why no Conservative MP made this motion. The answer to that question is very simple:
They couldn't. They weren't stopped by procedural matters, they were stopped by perception matters.
If a Conservative MP were to make that motion, then ALL Conservative MPs would have been painted with the brush of "intolerance" and would be whitewashed with screams of "They're taking away our Human Rights". Making this motion would be like throwing gasoline on the tiny flame in the back of voters minds that asks "can we trust these guys with a majority?"
The perception, regardless of the reality, stops them from making the motion. The perception creates a good little sound bite that all the opposition leaders can spout ad nauseum. Perception becomes a big ugly monster that supercedes reality.
So all I can say is good on ya Dr Martin, for making the motion. My biggest question now is "Who among the Members of Parliament or Senators will oppose this motion?"
